deleting a block

I am using Word 2002. Recently the program has started to
do this odd thing. When I select a block of text and hit
the delete key, instead of deleting it, a prompt appears
in the status bar that says "Delete block? No (Yes)" I
have to answer the message for the delete to occur. this
does not happen with single characters, only when I select
more than one. I have a feeling some setting is messed
up. Any help will be appreciated.
