deleting a header and footer

We started Word today. There was an unwanted header and footer showing. We
can't
get rid of it. I highlighted the Paragraph mark, and pressed delete key like
the help
assistant suggested, but they are still there. We also tried to open an old
document and the header and footer are on those as well. We don't know how
to change whatever is set wrong for our needs
Thanks

To: Babydentist,

Have you tried double clicking on the header? This should open the
header/footer view. (You could also goto: View > Header and Footer.) Then you
should be able to delete the header and/or footers.

If when you open a new Word document, you find these same header/footers,
then that would imply that they are part of your normal template. You might
want to take a look at:

Once a document or template has had header/footer content (or even if the
Header/Footer style has been modified from the Header/Footer pane, without
adding content), the document/template will contain an empty paragraph that
cannot be deleted.

This does not appear to be true for Word 2000, nor Word 2003. I deleted a
header, and then toggled the paragraph Pilcrow and there was no paragraph
mark representing the header in either Word 2000 or 2003. Perhaps this is a
later feature?

It's quite possible this has been fixed. I just opened in Word 2003 one of
the templates that had had a persistent header/footer and deleted the
paragraph mark. It didn't seem to disappear, but when I closed the header
pane, I didn't see it in Print Layout view. I can't remember what other
templates might have suffered from this particular problem, so I can't tell
whether this is a display issue or not. I just opened the .wbk file, and I
don't see a paragraph mark there, either, until I use View | Header and
Footer, so I don't know how I could tell.

What I do see is a paragraph mark in the header pane when I View | Header
and Footer, even in Normal.dot, which I know I have kept clean, but none in
Print Layout view. It's possible that this issue affects only Word 2002. It
certainly still exists in some version, though, as testified to by the
number of people who have trouble with labels.

No, I have 2003 (only), and once-a-header, always-a-header. You can
set its parameters to 0 in the Page Setup pane, but it's always still
there.

Thanks for confirming. I couldn't figure a way to confirm this, though: when
I set the top margin to 0.4" (leaving the header margin at 0.5"), the header
didn't seem to interfere (after I'd deleted the header paragraph in the
template), yet I know I've had problems with headers/footers interfering in
the past.
