Deleting an appointment with time marked as busy

When I delete an appointment from my calendar, the time period remains shaded to indicate that the time slot is busy not only for that day but for that time of day forever on the calendar. How do I remove this "busy" marking? The original appointment was for one day only and not a recurring appointment nor was it a shared apppointment. Any help will be appreciated.
