deleting birthday field to avoid default 1/1/04 on calender

All of my contacts show a default birthday and anniversary in the "general" tab and show up on January 1st for all of my contacts on the calender. Besides going through individually and changing them to "none", how can I either change a categorie to not include this, or take the aniversary,birthday fields out?
