Deleting border

T

Trevor L.

BlankAt some stage, I accidentally set up a left border in FP, and now, no matter what I do, I can't get rid of it.

Every time I save my Home Page (index.html) I end up with a left border of hyperlinks to my other pages. So if I publish this from FP, my website contains these links which I don't want - I have already set them up in my top border. Interestingly, this border is not applied to other pages - only index.html !

There is a workaround, of course: Exit FP, edit index.html in a text Editor (e.g. UltraEdit) to get rid of these links and then upload via an FTP program. But if I forget and/or use FP thinking the problem has gone away, there they are back again.

Help!!
What do I do? <<-(

BlankWith your web open in FrontPage, open the _borders folder and delete the left.htm file.
Then recalculate hyperlinks, and then publish.

Steve,
I deleted left.htm from _borders, then clicked on Tools | Recalculate
Hyperlinks (while the folder _borders was still open) and left.htm was
recreated.

Rob,
I then deleted left.htm again, and clicked on Format | Shared Borders, made
sure only Top and Bottom borders were ticked and clicked on OK. left.htm did
not recreate but as soon as I clicked on Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks it
came back again.

Both,
Interestingly, while the Left borders button can be deselected, the
subsidiary button "Include navigation buttons" remains ticked even though
greyed out. If I select Left Borders then deselect both "Include navigation
buttons" and "Left Borders", left.htm is recreated. Also, as soon as I
delete left_htm, the "Include navigation buttons" becomes ticked (although
greyed out).

It is difficult to describe the sequence of events precisely, because I am
trying both of these suggestions, plus amending the code directly in
UltraEdit. The net result is that whatever I do, left.htm is recreated and
index.html has the code from left.htm inserted into it (but not any other
html file, even though in Shared Borders I am specifying All Files)

Rob,

No, I am working on the local copy only. When I get that right (by hook or
by crook), then I upload everything.

The only jumping I am doing is after I close FP. If at this stage, I open
index.html from Windows Explorer and the left border comes back, I am then
opening index.html in UltraEdit, deleting the code for the left border and
then uploading via an FTP program.

I repeated a sequence of events and this time I noted what I did.

This is it.

Opened FP
Deleted left.htm
Opened Navigation - nothing exists in this panel except index.htm (I had
previously done this.)
Shared Borders - Ticked All pages, Top Border (No navigation) , Bottom
Borders, then OK.
Accepted message re replacing Top and Left
borders. (This caused left.htm to be recreated)
Deleted left.htm
Recalculated Hyperlinks (This caused left.htm to be recreated)
Deleted left.htm
Exited FP
Opened index.html directly from Windows Explorer - it looks O.K. - there is
no left border.

So I think all is O.K. and it is probably safe to use FP to upload, although
I haven't - I used an FTP program.

I don't know why FP recreates the left shared border. I think it may be due
to an interaction between the Navigation Panel, the Hyperlinks, and Shared
Borders. I don't whether I can ignore the fact that left.htm gets recreated
after nearly every action, or whether I have to exit FP and recheck
index.html by opening it in Windows Explorer. To date the left border has
not come up in FP, only when opening index.html outside of FP.

By the way, my web server cannot be opened from FP, something about it being
an FTP server

Rob,

Re my last post.

Although I am not getting the links on the left border, I am getting these
extra table cells

<td valign="top" width="1%"></td>
<td valign="top" width="24"></td>

So I have managed to delete the links themselves but not the border !!

Neither of those cells are ever visible in FP code/html view
- so you are apparently trying to edit the pages outside of FP

Open the site in FP and search (all page in html/code) for
<meta name="Microsoft Theme"
(the rest of the tag will be your theme name and settings)
Delete the entire tag

Rob,
Thanks for the reply.

It would be great to stay within FP, but the problem is that FP is not as
WYSIWYG as I hoped. In FP, I see a page without a left border, but when I
publish, I see this border, albeit a blank one - previously it had links in
it. That's why I look at it before I publish.

I will continue to investigate, including looking at the post from SBR.

SBR,
Thanks.

I note that these cells are not visible in FP, but they are present when FP
is exited and they are uploaded when I publish in FP. I only edit the pages
outside FP because I don't want these cells at all.

I have searched in FP for <meta name="Microsoft Theme" ... and it is not
present in any html file. To date, I have not specifically tried to use a
theme because I am not sure what themes do, and what the difference is
between a theme and a template.

When I open my (local) website, and go to Shared Borders I see these ticked
Top
Include Navigation borders
Bottom

index.html has these settings against Current Page (Include Navigation
borders is ticked but greyed out)
Other html files have them against All Pages

When I exit FP, left.html is recreated and index.html has two extra cells
inserted . I have uploaded it to http://tandcl.homemail.com.au/index.html so
that you can see.

If I then delete left.html and reopen the site in FP, the same sequence
reoccurs

If I untick Include Navigation borders then my top border is replaced by a
default. Copying the original top.html back and reopening the site causes
the same sequence to repeat

I want to tweak FP so that it doesn't do this

Many thanks to all for their time and patience. There must be something
stupid that I am doing that experienced persons would automatically not do.
But what is it??

You need to disable Shared Border on the pages you don't want them to appear on, if not use themes,
you also need to display theme on all or individual pages.

Thanks Thomas,

I actually want Top and Bottom Shared Borders on every page so that my site
is consistent. (What happens when I have more pages than will fit on the top
border is a problem I may have to face later.)

But I don't want a left border. I put one on at some stage, then decided I
didn't want it. Now I can't get rid of it. The left border does not appear
on Format|Shared Borders on any page although the Top Border has "Include
Navigation" ticked which I think I don't want. See earlier postings on what
happens when I delete this.

I am not using themes so far as I can tell as there is no
<meta name="Microsoft Theme"... > on any page

I have had a lot of feedback from MVPs for which I thank you all. I wish I
could resolve this.

( I need a smiley here for frustrated but not yet giving up.)

Trevor,

When you apply Shared Borders to a web / site, they are applied to pages within the web / site. In
order to turn them off on individual page, you must open the page, then Format | Shared Border, to
disable the specific border. Now if you later decide that you want have the specific border
displayed on all pages again, you must remember the page that you disabled on, to open and
re-enable.

If you delete the left.htm file and FP puts it back, means that you have a page in the web / site
that is still using the left shared border.

If you site is not too large, suggest you remove all shared borders and replace with the FP Include
Page component which will eliminate this issue, plus allow you more flexibility with placement on
your pages.

Thomas,
Thank you, thank you

I think you have hit the nail on the head.

What I did was delete any test html files which I had I my local web. I also
deleted left.htm and then reopened the local website with the idea in mind
of using includes.

However, I could not find enough info about include. In W3Schools, includes
are mentioned as elements of ASP PHP XSL and XSD, not HTML. I couldn't get
any code to work inside HTML. I have the feeling some of these are
server-side options which may not be supported by my web, anyway.

What I did was reset the borders to Top and Bottom only - no navigation. And
it worked - no left border. So some the test files must have been using a
left border.

I would still be interested in using includes if I can find out how, but for
the meantime, all is now well.

Many thanks to all who made suggestions.

There is the FP Include Page Component and there are Server-Side Includes, which is what you read
about at W3School.

For FP under help search for "Include" or "Display a page on another page"

I found the relevant include menu in FP. It seems to use a command called
webbot, but the FP help doesn't give any more info on what the webbot
functions are.
