Deleting Character Group - MSWord

In msWord 2003 when I locate the cursor within a word and press the delete key
the character to the right is deleted. When I press the backspace key the
character to the left is deleted, however, when I high-light a group of
characters and press the delete key nothing happens.

This does not happen in Excel or Power Point. In those applications the
character group is deleted which, is what happens in other Word installations I
have used. I have removed and re-installed the Office 2003 suite but to no
avail. How do I get the delete function to work properly - could find no help
on ms site.

Tools | Options | Edit: Typing replaces selection.

Thanks Anne. "Navigation keys for Wordperfect users" was checked in
Tools|Options|General. I would never have found that in a month of Sundays.
