deleting emails from outlook 2007

Looking for smoe help on using Outlook 2007. I'm not able to delete
an email by highlighting the email and then using delete key on
keyboard; nor am I able to right click on email and delete via drop
down---delete function is there but not "hot".

If I select more than one email to delete using the shift key all
functionality woks as it should.

Any suggestions?
