deleting messages using IMAP

We are running Outlook 2007 and using an IMAP based server. I was asked by a
colleague whether the following was possible and did not know.

My colleague wants to copy an email received in his IMAP incoming mail
folder to a Outlook mail folder. He does not want the original email in his
IMAP folder to be deleted. I know this is possible by creating a simple rule.
He then wanted to know if it was possible that when he deletes the copy of
the message stored in an Outlook folder, the original email stored in his
incoming IMAP folder could also be automatically deleted or marked for
deletion. I do not know if this is possible. Any idea?

Thanks.

I don't understand. IMAP mirrors the folders on the server - why would he
want to copy it locally and then when it's deleted mark it for deletion on
the IMAP server? Why not just keep it in the IMAP folder and then delete it
there when needed?

I believe he wants to be able to better organize his messages and copy them
from the server to a "local"Outlook PST file.

I am also not sure our local IMAP server provides the flexibility in
creating folders that he wants.

Your approach is another possibility that I can suggest to him.

Well unless he needs to access the IMAP mails from another computer, then
all he needs to do is to MOVE the mails from the IMAP to local....

Except that he specified that he wanted the original message kept on the IMAP
server until the copy was deleted ...

I actually use your approach and simply move the messages from my IMAP
folder to my Outlook PST folder.

There is no communication between a local storage PST and the IMAP account,
so no, you can't delete a message from a local PST and expect it to delete
from the IMAP account automatically.
