Deleting Outline Numbering in H1 does not delete numbering in H2

Hi
I'm using Word 2003. I understand from MVP site that to get a robust outline
numbering scheme, that H1 style should have the outline numbering set up for
it and that other Heading (H2,3,4 etc) should be based on H1 style(& its
numbering).
That was all working fine, however I needed to delete the numbering scheme.
I deleted it in H1, however outline numbering still appeared in H2, H3, H4
etc! Word appears to have applied the Outline numbering scheme itself to H2,
3 etc...
Obviously I can delete the outline numbering from other styles but thought
that the H1 controls the numbering, and as it has no numbering the other
headings would follow suit as that is the way I set it up.
Can anyone help me understand the logic of this and what is happening?
Many thanks
Marco

If you are referring to
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html, I don't
think that is what it says. It says that numbering for any level of an
outline-numbered list should be edited by starting with Modify Style for
Heading 1. There is no need to base lower-level headings on Heading 1, and
the numbering for each style is set in the Outline Numbering dialog, where
each level of numbering is linked to a specific style. If you want to remove
numbering from all the styles, you need to do this through Modify Style:
Format: Numbering for Heading 1, removing the numbering for each level.

Hi
Many thanks for your post. But just to clarify what I have been saying if I
have modified the following styles as:
Heading1: Based on no style, Outline numbering applied, various character
formatting
Heading 2: Based on Heading 1, various other formatting
Heading 3: Based on Heading 2, various other formatting
To turn off the Outline Numbering I had expected that as Headings 2 & 3
inherit the numbering from Heading 1, I would just need to go into Heading1,
modify that style by right clicking on H1 within the Styles and Formatting
task pane then Modify>Format>Numbering and click on None.
What happens is that H1 has no numbering, as expected, however H2 & H3 does.
The styles formatting descriptions read as follows:
Heading1: Based on no style, various other formatting
Heading 2: Based on Heading 1, Outline Numbering formatting, various other
formatting
Heading 3: Based on Heading 2, Outline Numbering formatting, various other
formatting
Should this be expected? The reason I ask is because if one modifies the
Normal style say to the font, or bold that would ripple across the other
styles, as would any subsequent changes and I expected the same for the above.
I have read the link you sent me (thanks btw…) and believe I have followed
it carefully.
If I haven’t misunderstand your post, I would need to go to every Heading
style and remove the Outline Numbering formatting Heading by Heading….?
Many thanks
Marco

Heading 2 etc. are not inheriting numbering from Heading 1 - they are taking
their numbering from lower levels of the same list format. Because they are
still linked to these levels, they are still picking up that numbering.

You can remove the numbering from several styles at once by unlinking all
the levels (choose "no style") from Customize. However, you are likely to
find that Word reapplies the list format on leaving the dialog, either to
the current Heading style (if you modify the style) or to the selected
paragraph (if you work from Bullets and Numbering), so you'll still have one
more step - either to modify the style numbering again to None, or reset the
paragraph to remove the direct formatting number.
