Deleting problems with Word 2004

L

luginau

Hi friends,

I have installed Mac.Office on my Power PC.
Everything works well, except with Word 2004.

The problems that I have encountered are as follows:

1) if I type a word and realize I have made a mistake and click
"delete" on the keyboard, the cursor does not move left and,
consequently, it does not delete the unwanted letter;

2) the same problem manifests itself if I highlight a letter or a word
that I wish to delete and click "delete" on the keyboard.

I have looked at some of the postings and answers in the group, but I
have not found the answer to the above problems.

If anyone can offer a solution I would be very grateful.
This annoying problem never happened with the previous versions of
Word.

Thanks in anticipation,

luginau

Hi luginau -

It's good that you have looked at other posts, but unless you tell us what
specific attempts you've made we have no idea what that may be:) All we can
suggest is possibly things you've already tried.

Is OS X & Office fully updated? Office, especially, is probably several
updates beyond the version on your installation disk.

The second problem is almost always due to Word> Preferences> Edit: Typing
Replaces Selection not having a check in the box.

Resolution to the first issue may depend on what type of "Power PC" you have
- Laptop or full keyboard? - and whether that keyboard is stock Apple or
from a 3rd party.

Also, there are typically *2* delete keys on a full keyboard - one in the
main section and one in the navigation group. What is the behavior of each?

Give us some specific details & perhaps we can offer more.

Hi Bob,

first of all, thank you for your prompt response.
In answer to your questions, here are the details you sought:

1) Yes, my OS X & Office has been regularly updated every time
updates became available, before I installed Office 2004.

2) Yes, Word> Preferences> "Edit: Typing Replaces Selection" has a
check in the box in Word 2004.

3) My computer is a Power Mac G5 'Tower' with the following Hardware
Overview:

Machine Model: Power Mac G5
CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1.5 GB SDRAM
Bus Speed: 900 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.1.5f2
Serial Number: YM340BPGPGB

4) The keyboard is a stock Apple keyboard that came with the
computer.

5) both the "delete" key in the main section and that in the
navigation group behave in the same way in Word 2004 (ie. as described
in points (1) and (2) of my earlier email.

I hope that the above details may be sufficient for you to help me to
resolve this annoying problem.

Thank you in anticipation, and kind regards,

luginau

OK, this information helps eliminate a few possibilities:) & you've done a
good job of describing what _doesn't_ happen, but you still haven't
described what _does_ happen when pressing each of those keys.

If no text is selected the 'delete'

key should obviously delete one character to the left, whereas the 'del' key
(nav group) should delete one character to the right. (I'm sure you're aware
of this, I'm just kinda thinking out loud.)

If text _is_ selected either of the two should delete the selected text.
Does the text remain selected or does the highlighting disappear & the
insertion point move to one end of the previously selected text?

Do you have any programs installed that in some way modify keyboard
operation or act as "helpers" or provide utility operations?

Try launching Word while pressing the Shift key & see if the behavior
persists.

Hi Bob,

thanks for your suggestion.

I have tried launching Word 2004 while pressing the Shift key, as you
suggested, and both the "delete" key on the mayn section of the
keyboard and the "delete" key in the navigation section have
performed their function as expected.
Hopefully, this will be the end of the annoyance experienced so far.
Thank again for your kind assistance.
Regards,

Hate to burst your bubble, but that isn't a *fix* - it's just a
troubleshooting step:) The shift key starts Word without allowing any
macros or add-ins to load... But it also disables any customizations &
certain other features.

Now you need to determine what it is that *is* loading when you start Word
_without_ using the Shift key. Re-read the end of my previous post & try to
identify what it may be. Once you disable/uninstall the culprit you should
be able to start Word normally without problems.
