deleting spam

My 'empty junk email' schedule is set to run after 1 day, but it fails to remove spam messages which somehow manage to have future dates on them (e.g. a current one is dated 21/12/19). I know I could just move it to the deleted folder or delete it manually, but I don't want to view potentially offensive material. Is there another solution?

If you don't want to view these items, turn off the Preview Pane (View ->
Preview Pane -> None). Then select the items and delete them. You can then
reset the Preview Pane if you like.

Thanks for this. But I'd still like to know why these messages aren't deleted
by the automatic schedule. Albertine

They're not deleted because the delete schedule only deletes "old" messages,
and since these have future dates, they're not old!

So basically there's no way such future-dated messages can be removed except by selecting them. I had hoped to avoid this (even thoiugh I now know how not to view them, thanks to your advice). Can the sender tell if messages have been opened?

Yes, you must delete future-dated messages manually.

I don't believe that Entourage sends return receipts to tell the sender that
a message has been opened. (Perhaps one of the MVPs can confirm or deny.)
But it shouldn't matter if you open it without viewing it. That doesn't
count as "opening" so no receipt should be sent, even if the sender
requested one.

Well, that's answered my concerns: that (a) if i open junk the sender can identify that I've done so, and be encouraged to send more, and (b) viruses can get in via spam if opened. So thanks to everyone who has replied to my query. I appreciate all your advice.
