Deleting task without deleting e-mail; message views

Two quesions:

How can I delete a task on my to-do list without deleting the e-mail
connecting it?

Also, when I reply to an e-mail, the "message tool bar" does not appear and
it takes an extra click to bring it up. It used to appear automatically.
How do I get it back?
