Deleting text while I type, very annoying

G

GO

I have been using word for almost forever and just today it decided to
not let me type in text without deleting whatever is next. It makes
it impossible to insert a word or even correct the spelling of a word
without me having to retype the whole thing. Even the space bar acts
like a delete button accept it deletes forward rather than
backwards. In other words, the text I type replaces the text already
there. The words aren't highlighted when I do this so I know it's not
that. I have no idea what caused this but am desperate to fix it so
that I can finish my project. Please help!
Thank you!!!

Hit help and enter 'overtype' into the search field.
From there you may be able to work out how you got into overtype mode
and how to get out of it.
I offer this seemingly unhelpful advice because there are a few
different ways you can set up your work environment, each of which can
get you into overtype mode in a different way.

And I can't be bothered researching this properly. ;-)

yes! you solved my problem! there are these tiny little buttons on
the bottom (staus bar) of the program where you can click for
overtype, track changes, etc... I had no idea they were there. i must
have clicked it on accident in my excitement of finishing my project.
Stupid OVERTYPE!!!!!

Thank so much Mr. ER.

Its good to hear it worked. I had a private bet with myself that it was
those stupid buttons. I had turned them off years ago, along with
almost every other stupid toolbar that clutters up one's work
environment.

I understand your fervid aversion to the dreaded rodent, but OverType mode
can also be activated by the Insert key. I find I accidentally catch *it*
with an errant finger far more frequently than inadvertently clicking in the
~20mm x 30mm box:)

If you *have* an insert key, the only sensible use for it is "Use insert key
to paste...", which is a Word preference.

Having set that, you can then set your "Paste as plain text" macro on
Command + v and get the best of both worlds :)

Hi L.C.

The "left side"? No, that's not where Elliott is a pain....

Heh! I started to feel offended, then I read aloud what I'd written in
my best Paranoid Android voice. You are right!

"Here I sit, with a brain the size of a planet, .... and all I get to
do is park toolbars"

Yes!!

Sorry if that sound like I want to offend you. I like Marvin messages, The
word Robot comes into existence from favourite Author of one person I
appreciated very much.
But we rather stop talking otherwise we with the brain of planet's size will
have to think down to level of ordinary Earthman as we will be send with
pain to stand in the corner :) and of course we will feel very depressed as
nobody wants to talk to us.
