deleting text

I just upgraded to XP home edition and have had a few problems but most are
corrected. In MS Word when I wanted to delete a word or line of text, I would
just highlight it and the next keystroke or back space would elininate it.
Now when I hit backspace it eliminates the highlight and the cursor jumps
back to front of the highlighted text. I would like to do this without going
to the edit menu and hitting clear which eliminates the highlighted text.
Thanks

Kelly,
Go to Tools - Options - Edit tab - see if overwrite selected text is
checked.
Also on the General tab uncheck the two WordPerfect options.

The word perfect boxes were not checked but typing replaces selection took
care of the problem.
Thanks to all.
