deleting unwanted blank area between a heading and body text

I have a large blank area between a section heading on one page and the body text at the top of the succeeding page. When I double click on the blank area paragraph symbols appear - I did not insert them. They can be formatted (space between them, font, font size, style, etc.) and when I delete each one the text moves up, but then immediately returns to the succeeding page. Any idea as to the cause of this and a solution?

Thanks

Hi Bill;

Yes, you *did* insert them - or at least "commanded" to have them inserted -
by double-clicking in an otherwise empty space :) You invoked a feature by
the name of Click and Type. When you dbl-clk on a blank area of a "page" the
program understands that you want to start entering content there so it
automatically creates the necessary number of empty paragraphs (and tabbing)
in order to comply with your request.

If you want to disable the feature go to Word> Preferences> Edit & clear the
check at the bottom of the preference panel.

Sorry - I was interrupted before I could address your other concern so I
just sent what I had already written. As to the "blank space"...

Make sure you still have the non-printing characters (¶) displayed. My first
suspicion is that the paragraph which follows the empty space has a mark
that looks kinda like a bullet adjacent to its first line. That indicates
that a paragraph formatting attribute for line & page break control has been
applied to that paragraph - either *directly* or by way of a Style. How to
properly change it depends on which of the two methods was used.

If the paragraph has a Style applied which includes the Page Break Before
attribute you can modify the Style to remove the attribute. Keep in mind
that any other paras controlled by the same Style will also be affected.

If the attribute was directly applied or you don't want all paras using that
Style to be changed, click in the para, go to Format> Paragraph - Line &
Page Breaks, then clear the check for Page Break Before.

If that doesn't happen to be an accurate guess you'll need to provide a more
detailed description of what non-printing characters you see in & between
the paras preceding & following the space. Anything else you can offer about
the content & formatting would be helpful.

Couldn't he as soon as he finished typing the last item before needing
the section break insert the section Break Then start typing again?

Well, that depends on the type of SB. Also, we don't yet know that there is
a Section Break :) As I wrote, the more likely [IMHO] cause of the "dead
space" is Page Break Before paragraph formatting.

I know I've edited a set of Bylaws for our Association and what I did
when I needed a Page Break was as soon as I put a Period at the very
last sentence I wanted on a given page direct after that period I would
choose insert Page Beak.

Another consideration the poster will have to consider, is how he has
*widow* and *orphan* control set. If at all possible you want set either
off or keep together.

That may be true, Phillip, but if you click/dbl-click in the empty part of a
page following a Page Break or a Next Page Section Break the empty
paragraphs or the content you type will go automatically to the top of the
next page. IOW, what you do *below* the break doesn't move the break.

True it doesn't move the break but it does start at the top of the page
or section just below the amount you have set for header.
