Deleting User-Created Styles in Word 2007

Word 2007. I am attempting to delete several user-created styles from
the template (not just the current document). In the Styles Pane I go
to Manage Styles, the Edit tab, and then choose (near the bottom) "new
documents based on this template." Then I click delete and hit yes
when the confirmation comes up. When I exit Word I save the changes to
the template (which happens to be the normal template). But when I
open Word again the styles are still there. What am I missing? Thanks,

Ross

I was surprised to see the identical thing here.

You can delete the styles more directly using the Organizer. In the
Developer tab, click Document Template, then click the Organizer button
(lower left corner). There, in the right side, under In Normal.dotm:, select
the styles you want to delete, then click the Delete button.

I created a style, and was unable to delete it the way you were trying.
However, when I deleted it using the Organizer, it was actually deleted.

Note: if you don't see the Developer tab, click Office button - Word
Options - Popular, and put a check next to "Show Developer tab..."

Hmm, when you delete a style, another style will be selected in the "Select
a style to edit" box; my guess is that Word is then copying *that* style to
the template if you choose "New documents based on this template."
