Deliverables linked to tasks

Hi!

When setting up deliverables, you can link to a task. I notice when the
task changes, it won't update the deliverable and I saw the post from
December that mentions MS treats deliverable dates differently and won't do
this. I am curious as to what the "Get Updates" link is for and what the
"Accept changes from server" drop down option does, if it doesn't update the
date?

Is there really no possible way to get the deliverable dates to actually be
linked to the task?

Thank you for your help! I find this discussion group invaluable and find
many solutions here. Thank you to the people helping us out!

I just had a thought - maybe I should be using Milestones instead of
deliverables? What we really want to do is identify some high level points
in the project that we can track.

Thoughts?

Microsoft assumption is that if you miss a Deliverable date, then you must
go back to the customer/client and renegotiate a new Deliverable date. I
think that matches up with the real world, and I agree with their
assumption. In your situation, I would recommend that you use Milestones in
your project to indicate key Finish dates for Deliverable sections and Phase
sections of your project. We recommend as a best practice that you organize
your project into Phases and Deliverables (create the WBS) and then create a
Milestone indicating the Finish date of each Phase and Deliverable section.
If you need to indicate target Finish dates for your key Milestones, you can
use a Deadline date (double-click the task, select the Advanced tab, and
enter the date in the Deadline field). Hope this helps.

Thanks Dale! I am using your suggestion and using Milestones instead of
Deliverables. I made a view based on a new custom field that identifies the
items I want to show. And this view is available from Project Center, which
is great...But... is there any way to add this view as a web part to a
particular Project's Workspace?

Does that make sense?

Thanks again - good info!

Yes, you can add the Project Details web part to the Left or Right area of
the Project Workspace page. Navigate to the Project Workspace and then
click Site Actions - Edit Page. Click the Add a Web Part button in the Left
or Right display area and add the Project Details web part. Click the Exit
Edit Mode (X) button in the upper right corner of the page when finished.
Each person can now select your new View in the Project Details web part
when they navigate to the Project Workspace for the project in question.
Hope this helps.
