Deploy Project 2007 with SharePoint 2007

Eric Chatham

Hello,

I have a question on how to deploy Project 2007 with SharePoint 2007. I was
reading a few technotes on the setup thereof, but I'm still unsure how the
setup will proceed. We have one server dedicated to SharePoint 2007 (Server
2008). Do we need to install Project 2007 on the same server? Can we
install it on a different server? And, if so, how would we integrate Project
to work with SharePoint? Here are the articles I've been reading:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197558(TechNet.10).aspx

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197479(TechNet.10).aspx

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms454209.aspx

I'm confused with the installation. Do I dedicate one server for Project
2007? And, do I need to also install Project 2007 on the SharePoint Server?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Whether you place Project Server on a single server with MOSS is driven by
your performance and availability requirements. It's technically possible,
simply install MOSS SP1 onto the server, slipstream Office Server SP1 into
the "updates" folder of the Project Server installation binaries, then
install Project Server.

If this is for a production environment, I would strongly recommend having
at least one dedicated server for Project Server. Be aware that every server
in the farm needs to have the Project Server Binaries installed, which maybe
cost prohibitive. An alternative to this would be to create two farms. On
the farm which runs the enterprise search, create a search scope for the
Project Server workspaces.

It asks me if I want to install the SharePoint Product and Technologies in
the setup. Do I want to leave that option checked? I already have
SharePoint installed on another server. We just want a Project 2007 install
on this specific server.

I'm really confused on this installation!!!

1. We have a SharePoint Server in place already. Do I need to install
Project Server on the SharePoint Server? If I do, do I need initiate the
"SharePoint Products and Technologies" wizard? I'm afraid that if I do this,
it's going to erase the entire SharePoint site on the existing SharePoint
server.

2. Secondly, I want to install Project Server 2007, what exactly do I need
to check or leave unchecked in the Project Server 2007 setup process.

Please let me know. I'm not willing to complete step (1) just yet until I
know *for sure* my SharePoint site will not be wiped out by leaving the
checkmark on "proceed with SharePoint Products and Technologies" setup.

Eric:

If you're installing to a box that doesn't have SharePoint, you need to
install SharePoint. If this is going to be part of the same farm as your
other SharePoint server, then you'll need to install Project Server binaries
on the othe machine as well.

One box does have SharePoint. On the box that has SharePoint, when I do the
Project 2007 setup, do I leave the box checked (Install SharePoint
Technologies and Products) after it installs Project Server? I worked *very,
very* hard on our SharePoint site; to me, leaving the box checked indicates
it's going to wipe out the entire SharePoint site I worked very hard on and
replace it with a blank one; I just want to know if that is what I need to do
(leave box checked). Is this the binaries that previous posts were referring
to?

Eric,

There's a specific scenario for deploying Project Server to an existing
MOSS server. The TechNet article that describes that scenario is located
at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197558.aspx

Hi Richard,

I saw that article. That's the one I'm questioning. I'm ready to image the
whole drive before doing the Project 2007 deployment in fear that it's going
to wipe out the SharePoint Site. I really don't want to redo a SharePoint
Site.

Can someone give me a straight forward answer to my question (and reason)?

"I'm installing the binaries on an existing server where our production
SharePoint Site exists. Will leaving the box checked for installing the
'Sharepint Products and Technologies' after the 'Project binaries' install
overwrite the entire, *existing* SharePoint Site?"

I only say this because when I accidentally left the box checked on the
server where Project was going to be hosted, Project 2007 installed a fresh
SharePoint Site.
