Describe the Tasks

MAT

Hi..
I want to explain my problem with an example.

Today i have one Task and it lasts 6 hours. I have 2 Hours free. And in this
2 Hours i work on something (general Work - No Project ). We can create an
Administrationsproject for it or a normal Project.
What i want to ask is: "Is it possible to describe the work i did in 2
Hours? (For example with filling a field, without using any note)

If you are using Project Server 2003, you could use a custom enterprise Task
text field with a value list for this purpose. The Project Server
administrator would need to create the custom field in the Enterprise Global
file and include a value list containing the possible activities that a team
member might do in your administrative plan. Because the team member cannot
append values to the value list, your Project Server administrator would
have to include EVERY possible activity on the value list.

The project manager of the administrative plan would then need to add the
new custom enterprise Task text field to the list of published fields in the
admin plan using Tools - Customize - Published Fields. Then the project
manager would also need to republish the assignments in the admin plan using
Collaborate - Publish - Republish Assignments to "push" the value list for
the new field to each uer's timesheet in PWA.

Lastly, your Project Server administator would need to modify the Timesheet
page in PWA to include the new custom enterprise Task text field. Please
note, however, that this new column will appear for EVERY task on each
user's timesheet page, and not just for tasks in the admin plan. However,
the admin plan tasks will be the only tasks for which team members can
actually select a value from the value list in that column. Hope this
helps.

Wait a minute. It just dawned on me that the team member would only be able
to select a SINGLE value list value for the ENTIRE task. Because of this,
he/she wouldn't be able to use the value list to describe three different
activities performed during the 6 hours of Work on the task. For that
purpose, you would need to ask the team member to enter a task Note to
describe the work performed. This way, the team member would be able to log
each of the activities performed during the life of the task.

Perhaps you can find some other good use for the task value list. Hope this
helps.

Hi Mat,

did you consider break down task into 2 subtasks?
