Deselection isn't working

Hi, I selected the text box icon and successfully created a text box, but
then I couldn't get rid of the test box selection. I tried the ESC key and I
tried clicking on another area, but neither worked. I could select line
drawing instead, but then I couldn't deslect that. Now I can't do anything
with any of the boxes because everywhere I click it wants to insert a line.
How do I get out of the selections I have made in the past? Is there
something in the MS configurations that is preventing the ESC key from
working?

consider selecting the pointer tool (to the left of the text tool).
