Design and screen resolutions

S

Sam

Hi
When designing a website which screen resolution is
regarded as standard to acheive the best looking site on
all monitors etc. Eg that most people use on their
machines so I can avoid either large black spaces on my
site [when visitors use high res] or even lose pictures
etc in frames [when visitors use a lower res] etc.

What ever res I use to design a site I an horrified to see
it looking totally different on other users computers.

Any professional tips happily accepted.

There is not standard, but the majority of users view at 800x600 so either
- design at ~760 px fixed width tables
- or use 100% width tables

Stefan,

As a follow-up to your answer, does it make a difference if a Web page or
Web site is set up as left-aligned or centered?
Also, please tell me from a visitor's perspective, the difference he/she
might see in a site designed using pixel width vs. percentage width.

Thank you.

And if you're using FrontPage 2003, you can configure the Design view to
display at the same size as an 800x600 display or whatever size you choose.
It's EXTREMELY convenient when you want to make sure your page appears as
you intend in all resolutions.

Alignment depends on the layout and your preference
- not relevant w/ 100% tables

Just try creating the same page w/i a 100% width table and then in a fixed width table and resize you browser window

Jim,

Please elaborate on Design View for 2003. How is it improved over 2000. I
tested the beta but found it a little confusing and I did not like the new
Table Dialog Box which wouldn't fit on my 17" monitor top to bottom.

The table dialog (for compatibility w/ all language versions) is taller than can fit at 800x600
Change your resolution to 1024

Stefan,
I tried changing it but then could barely read the text. Is it time for me
to get a new monitor and if so, what size is now recommended?

That is a very weak excuse to force people to higher resolutions. A dialog
can be made to display dynamically based upon language.
