At the end of page 6, I have created a section break (new page) and inserted
page numbers and the numbers begin as expected from this point forward.
But...the previous six pages are also numbered 1-6 then they begin again on
the 7th page as 1-end of document.

How can I have the first 6 pages have no numbers at all and have the
document begin show pages 1-end of document from page 7?

On the Insert > Page Numbers (dialog) did you choose Format > Start at: 1
from the specific point in the document > ok (uncheck show number on first
page).

Place your cursor in the Section 2 header. On the Header/Footer toolbar,
click the "Same as Previous" button so that phrase disappears from the upper
right corner of the header area.

Then click the "Show Previous" button to go into the Section 1 header, and
delete the page number there. (Although every page must *have* a number,
there's no law that says it must *show* the number.)

[Note: If your page numbers are in the footers, make the same changes in the
footers instead of the headers.]

1. Place the insertion point in Section 2 and View | Header and Footer. This
opens the header pane and displays the Header and Footer toolbar.

2. If the page numbers are in the footer, click the Switch Between Header
and Footer button on the Header and Footer toolbar.

3. Click the Same as Previous button to turn it off. This unlinks the
header/footer in Section 2 from the one in Section 1.

4. Click the Show Previous button to get to the header/footer in Section 1.

5. Delete the page number in Section 1.
