desktop alerts keep ocurring until mail is opened

I would like it to be possible to have the desktop alerts keep occuring on a
regular reminder schedule until the mail is opened similar to the calendar
option.

Our staff is away from the computer a great deal of the time and may miss a
30-second desktop alert, and may never check the task bar to see if there is
new mail.

I looked in rules and can't find where to make it persistent, only last 30
seconds for one time only.

Thanks,
Waterboy
