Desktop Alerts not working

Does anyone have any clues why desktop alerts will not work? Entourage does not show any desktop alerts when I get new email. I've made sure that Entourage is NOT the active app so that alerts show up....nothing. Neither does "bounce the dock icon" or "bring app to front" work. It's like that entire set of preferences is being ignored...I am also having challenges with the alert sounds but at least that's a known issue. Anyone else had issues with desktop alerts?

TIA.

AFAIK, those functions should work. In cases like this, it's best to test in
a new User. Go to System Preferences and create a new User. When you test
Entourage be sure to set "leave mail on server" under the Accounts -->
Options tab.

I don't have those options set on my computer. I use custom sounds to notify
me for important mail. I find the regular alerts useless for me because of
spam mail that's received. On top of that I get mail with every download. I
like the special sounds so I am notified of special mail by sounds I choose.

See this page for using custom sounds with Entourage. You can even create
your own sounds or use computer voices to announce your mail. For example,
you could have the AppleScript say ³Mail from Dad².
