desktop changes when I launch word

Hello out there,

I just upgraded my windows nt laptop to windows xp, love
it; however the microsoft word for 97 now changes the
entire desktop (icons and screen resolution everytime it
is launches. Can anyone tell me why this happens or more
importantly how I can fix it.
