desktop icon selection

At one point I found a menu somewhere that allowed me to
select which ms office xp applications (power point,
excel, word and 1 or 2 others) I wanted to have
shortcuts/icons for on my desktop? Any idea where that
menu can be found?

I'm not familiar with that -- but if you search for msoffice.exe --- that
should locate the MS Office Shortcut bar -- which I find very convenient.
You can create shortcuts not only to MS applications --but to things like
the calculator, char map, other apps (like Quicken, or Photoshop), or even
specific documents! I have mine set on auto-hide -- so unless I want it --
I don't see it -- it takes no screen space --but I have quick easy access to
all of the things I use most often!

.....except the MS Office Small Business version doesn't offer the Shortcut
Bar option.
