Desktop Search Problems?

Why is it that everytime you open Microsoft Outlook (with SBM) the search
indexing program has to once again index thousands of files?

This is very time consuming and I suspect that on occasion it is causing
Outlook to crash. The reason I suspect this is that if I allow Outlook to
restart automatically it will just crash again whereas if I wait a little
while and let the search indexer clear up some of the files it has left to
index than Outlook starts fine.

I have been testing what happens if I close Outlook and then wait for the
indexer to finish (get to 0) and then open Outlook - the result is
predictable - the items left to scan will go up and up to a couple of
thousand and then s l o w l y work it's way back down.
I am using a Dual Core 2.4GHZ Intel processor with 4GB of Ram on Windows XP
SP2.
Any help would be appreciated as my machine is getting slower an slower and
I am now at the point of having to start Outlook and do something else for
10-15 minutes while the indexer does whatever it does!
I can't imagine why it has to re-index thousands of files just because I
stopped and started Outlook - note that this will happen whether or not I do
ANYTHING ELSE other than stop, wait for the index to finish, and then start
Outlook again.
