Desktop Search

From all the post about desktop search, one Question remains; is it supposed
to work, or is this something we usual not see fully functioning before
official release?

Also would like to hear about my earlier Question:

I installed wds update without any problem. It also searched and indexed
like normal. But . the hits don't get sorted anymore, meaning that
everything is put in the "everything"_section. E-mail, word documents,
pictures is put there, and nothing in the other search-sections. I also see
that outlook icons an gone, but other office-icons are like normal.

Is it a sollution or do I have to remove it all again...

Then another question:
If you disable the promt for installing the WDS 3.0 beta in the registry,
and keep your old (and working WDS); will you then be able to search in your
notes in OneNote the "old"-way, or is then searching not possible at all?

I believe that the "old" searching method will still work if you do not
install WDS 3.0

The WDS 3.0 program under discussion is a beta/preview of the search
engine, and there is no UI for it. (I concede that wrinkle was not
publicized well earlier this week). To see if the WDS install works,
please try some sample searches and submit bugs if the results are not
what you expect.

Well I have installed the WDS 3.0 several times each time in response to
the request in outlook or onenote 2007, but it seems to just never start
working. After each install I try to enable instant searching by initiating
a search and it just asks me to download and install all over again. Old
style search does work.

I've tried several things. First I installed without a prior version of
WDS installed. That didn't work. So then I thought maybe I needed WDS 2.06.5
installed, so I installed and got that to work from the toolbar, and then
installed WDS 3.0 beta on top of that. Still no go.

Any suggestions on how to try to fix this? Thanks.

I am having the exact same problem.

Erik, is there some list of things I can check to make sure this installs
properly or that OneNote 2007 beta recognizes it properly?

I would log a bug for this, and then follow the instructions Daniel
Escapa posted earlier regarding disabling the WDS prompt. I've
copied/pasted the info from Daniel's message below:

Q:
I don't want to install Windows Desktop search and I want OneNote to stop
asking me about it every boot. (Or: I just want to turn off indexing in
OneNote and use slow search instead)

A:
Set these regkeys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\OneNote\Options\Other
\EnableWDSIndexing
= 0
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\OneNote\Options\Other
\ShowWDSUpdateWarning
= 0

same 'Access Denied' problemo, even after all regedit permissions set etc.
Have disabled prompt ok. Meanwhile, any way to also hide the "Enable
instant search" prompt next to the search box?

Excellent.

I installed WDS 3.0 last night, and let it build its indices overnight.

When I got up this morning, I saw the indexer in the task list, sucking
down memory, and warnings about how little disk space I had left
(presumably due to an oversized page file).... and the stupid process
kept respawning whenever I killed it!

A couple of reboots, an uninstall, and an install later, 2.06.5 is back
on my machine happily waiting to be left alone to build new indices.

If I can retain my ability to search Outlook and OneNote data from the
task bar without upgrading to 3.0, I'll be a happy camper.

However, is the 3.0 upgrade necessary if we want to scan
OneNote-imported pdf's?

Yes, "old" search works after modifying the registry.

BUT, searching the old way (same before and after modifying) makes OneNote
to crash, and the system asks to "Recover Work and Restart OneNote"). Funny
is that this only happens after a while; after a crash-restart I can search
for what I want for a long time, but if I wait for a while it crashes.

Any suggestions? Shall I send a bug report?

I would definitely send a bug report about the crash.

I'm not sure what else to do - Hopefully a newer version of the WDS bits
will be forthcoming which should help with some of the crashes.

I dont even have the option to use the instant search. Under Tools, options,
search the box is grayed out. Why is this? any one think I should get it to
work? If so how?
Thanks
