Desktop Shortcuts not working with different Office versions

I have users with Office Pro or Office Std installed on their assigned
computers. Desktop folder redirection is employed. When a user tries to log
on to another computer with a different version of Office installed and use
the shortcut, they receive an error message that Office is not installed.
Any idea how to allow them to create their shortcuts to path straight to the
executable?? Or where the registry guid might be which can be changed to
allow it?
