I previously ran Win2K with Office 2003 including Outlook 2003 and about 40
programs for 18 months with not one incident of a problem. Then I installed
the Outlook PST backup program and I then after selecting the shut down
command, the Outlook backup program came up and I am convinced caused a
conflict and my Win2K boot sector was damaged and I was unable to retrieve
the system. As the Hdrive which was not damaged was 3 years old I decided to
replace this and upgrade to XP and reloaded the whole machine again.
Since then Outlook comes up but crashes at totally random actions and will
not stay up for more than a few hours. The actions I have taken after
reading some of the recommendations including those of APK on this newsgroup
to resolve this are:-
1. Disabled all add-in programs - ps All other Office programs running fine.
2. Ran the detect and repair (Scan pst) which indicated there were errors in
my pst file which it then repaired.
3. Uninstalled, Norton AV, Counterspy and Office 2003 and then reloaded
Office 2003 again
4. Downloaded and applied all the updates for Office including SP1
5. Left Norton AV and Counterspy off the machine while testing OLook but
still this crashes after any random command that I used while this was up
but then decides to crash using the same functions - so Norton and
Counterspy are not the problem.
6. Read the articles and others on the MS Support pages including those
recommended by APK
7. For info - This problem also occurred as well even before SP2 of XP and
SP1 of Office 2003 was applied. When originally installing Office 2003 on
the new Hdrive, Olook created a new pst file and I imported my old pst
file. My machine is a P3 730mhz with 380mb RAM, CD & DVD writer, 2 HDrives.
Under XPSP2 I am also unable to open several EXE self extracting files where
errors "unable to find dll programs" comes up. These are the same EXE
programs I used successfully under Win2000 before, otherwise all +- 40
other programs OK.
8. I am unable to create a further new pst file as even when I completely
uninstall Office 2003 and re-install, it brings up my old pst file.
Based on the info under 7 above, I believe that it is XP that is causing
the problem despite this having been around now for a few years and both the
operating system and Olook being MS products they cannot get these problems
sorted out.
As Outlook is probably the most important program on my machine which I use
extensively for tasks, contacts, phoning out & mail and unless I can find a
solution it means format C and start again with Win 2000 without the Outlook
backup pst program.
Can anyone please offer any suggestions.
Thanks in advance
