detected and recovered from a device failure

When scrolling through a large Word 2002 document, the following message is
encountered:

"Microsoft Windows detected and recovered from a device failure."

It then tells us to save the work and reboot.

Does anyone know why this message is displayed?

Graphics driver perhaps? Does the error occur if you start Windows in
Safe Mode?

Also, does this occur on a single document or any large document?
