Detecting when update is complete

Hi.
I have a Word document that has links in it to pull data from an
Excel spreadsheet to populate the document.

My question: Is there a way in VBA/Word to detect that all the
information in the Word document is completely updated?

There is a lot of info, and this takes a while. I would like to
detect its completion and kick off other processing (e.g.,
printing).

Is it possible to use VBA to open a Word document but disable
automatic update of the links? If so, then I could control when these
are updated from Excel. Then, when that returns, I could continue
processing.
