Determine if pst is a 2003 file or 2002 file

I have a client of mine that has a 4 gig pst file. Is there a way to find out
if the file is the newer format (2003) or should I just assume it is because
it is over the 2 gig limit that 2002 imposes? I could not find anywhere in
Outlook that gave me the format of the pst file.

If you have Outlook 2003, you can open the file in Outlook, right click its
root folder in the Folder List, click Properties, then Advanced. An Outlook
2003 Unicode .PST will just have "Personal Folders File" in the Format box,
while an earlier version .PST will show "Personal Folders File (97-2002)".
However, I think you are right that you can reasonably assume the earlier
version would never have been able to stretch to 4GB.

How large can a 2003 pst grow to?

The theoretical limit is greater than what a hard drive can store right now
-- something in the terabyte range. The practical limit is about 20GB which
is a registry limitation, as I understand it.

I also just read that a .PST file stored on a FAT32 drive or partition
cannot grow past 4GB.
