determine originating template for style

How can I determine which template contains the controlling style for an item
that is in the active word document. I need to change a styles underline
setting, but the style seems to be contained in many (of the 40 or so)
templates that are opened. I am guessing that my changes to the style in a
few of these templates (the style change did not follow to the document) are
being overwritten by a style of the same name in a template that I have not
found or just not yet modified.

Your mental picture of how Word works with styles is incorrect. After a document
is created, there is no longer _any_ connection between any template's styles
and those in the document (unless you force an update through the Templates &
Add-Ins dialog).

See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/templaterelations/index.html for more
discussion of this.

If you need to change a style in a document, then you need to change the style
_in the document_, not in any template.

I think my mental picture of most things is incorrect. :) I will read the
article. Thanks Jay.
