Determining if an Inspector is a new message

I want my commandbar to appear only when the message is new (not when an
inspector opens as a result of opening an existing message in a folder).

What's the best way to do that? Right now, I check the caption, and if it's
"Untitled Message", I know it's most likely a new message.

Is there a better way?
Thanks.

I had the same question, but for Forwards and Replies too. Is the best
way to handle these by looking at the Subject and checking for "FW:"
and "RE:"?

That would be language specific of course. For a reply in German it would be
AW.

It's a hack no matter what you try with that. If you know where the original
item is located you can use the conversation topic and by parsing the
conversation index (each new item in the thread adds a date struct addition
to the existing index) decide if it's a reply/forward but you can't tell
which it is.
