diacritical marks

Can anyone help with how to make diacritical marks? I'd like to know how to
make a macron (long sign over vowels) and how to put a dot just
underneath certain letters.

Strange idea! It's better to use Central European (CE) fonts.
They contain vowels with macron:

That's a legitimate option that I failed to include - I've fixed that.

However, since fonts are not embedded, if the document has to be
viewed/printed on another machine that doesn't have the CE font or a
close substitute, the character will display (without warning) as
another character or characters.

So "better" depends on the context, at least IMO.
