Diacritics

I have Office: Mac version X and am trying to insert letters with
diacritics into a Word document.
They are not listed under the 'insert-symbols' menu, but are given in
the Character Palette.
However, when I try to insert some letters - specifically the ones
with lines over the top - a message appears: "The current application
does not support this unicode-only character." Can anyone help me
please, as I have tried everything I can think of!

It is not lying to you. If you do a lot of that kind of thing, upgrade
to Word 2004, which does do Unicode, which means you have access to
tens of thousands of characters, not just a couple of hundred like you
have at the moment.

The Mac does unicode, as you can see in the character palette and lots
of other applications. Word v.X is not one of them, bur Word 2004 is.

If you only want the odd accent or macron, and you can't afford the
upgrade, there is bit you can do to fake it, with EQ fields and
creative use of the autocorrect. Google this group for 'macron'.
Be warned. It is *UGLY*
