dial up connection wont send and receive consistantly

hi there, i have had this problem for a few weeks and it is driving me crazy,
when i open outlook and do the first send and receive, outlook dials up
fine downloads and then hangs up like it should, however 5 minutes later
when i come to send something else, i click on send and receive, no dial up
dialogue appears and outlook tells me that its processing a send and recive
dialogue, however this is impossible as no dialup connection has been made,
i then have to exit out of outlook to get it to send again however its just
the once then i have to shut outlook down again for the next time,
im 100% sure my settings are correct, however this seems to be happening on
3 machines in the office and im unsure why

if some one could help me with this id really appreciate it as im loosing
the will to use outlook
