Dial up loading problems

I have posted here before re: my website which is still being tested at:
http://www.burdin-adr.netfirms.com. All is still working beautifully with
my DSL connection, but my dial up on another computer loads no -- zero --
photographs. Just so you don't have to re-invent the wheel, as the result of
the help of this community I have converted and compressed all images to
jpegs through Photoshop, and have re-published changes to the test web site
several times. I have no image larger than 18K; most are between 4K and 8K.
Again, no problems with DSL, but no photos (and some missing images) at all
with dial up. Would someone please use their dial up connection to see what
happens? http://www.burdin-adr.netfirms.com. Thanks so much.

CWhit,

Didn't you say in one of your other posts that you were using AOL for
dial-up? If so, as I remember it, they use an "accelerated dial-up" program.
If so, and it is the type that I tested some years ago, then the
"acceleration" works by reducing the quality of the images, all the way to
no images, for the fastest loading speeds. The version I tested could be
changed or even disabled, so you might look there, as your images do load
from here, and from your DSL connection, which means the problem lies with
your dial up connection/service.

Thanks again, David. I was pretty sure it was my dial up that is to blame --
but the dial-up accelerator you mentioned would produce the same result with
other web sites wouldn't it? I am reassured that you were able to load
images so I know the problem is in my system only. Maybe it has to do with
deleting cookies or something. I'll monkey around with the aol dial-up to
see if I can disable the accelerator and I'll post back. In any case, I'm
going to stop fooling around and get this thing up on our regular website
this weekend (hopefully) and then start rebuilding the site in FrontPage.
Thanks.

One of the reasons I didn't like the accelerator was the unpredictable ways
it loaded images....from different sites. The quality of the images sucked
too. You might also check AOL FAQs about problems with images not loading.

I checked the site last night with my dial-up using IE and had no problems.
Also chatted with an aol tech who opined my aol browser was malfunctioning
and suggested a fix. Haven't done it yet because I'm not concerned about it.
Here's a tip about a serious problem with Windows updates. There is a
security patch that is being automatically downloaded that will disable some
functions of all Office programs. It is KB908531. I noticed this last
Tuesday when the "insert file" and "insert picture" functions stopped working
in all Office apps right after an automatic update had downloaded. Spent
half-a-day working with a Word MVP and she found the problem. I deleted it
and everything began working. Just a couple of minutes ago, the same patch
was automatically downloaded again and caused the same problem. I just
deleted it. The patch again is KB908531.

Good to hear...and thanks for the info about the problem with the patch. I
must admit to going against all advice, and do not have my computers set to
automatically update anything, for exactly that reason. It seems too often
that MS, or someone else serves up a patch to fix one thing, only to break
something else. It leaves me paranoid about installing patches too soon...or
at all. But that is just me...and no one should follow my example.

Mary Sauer posted some info about the issue you describe on the main
newsgroup:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install
security update MS06-015 (15 Apr-06)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx has
been revised to v1.1 to reflect the issues in KB918165 and now points
to the KB918165.

Let me know when you get your site uploaded to your primary host...and good
luck.

Makes you wonder what kind of testing the developers are doing before they
disrupt the lives of millions of Office users. And I wonder what we would do
without the help of folks like you who devote so much time to find solutions
for us less savvy users. MS Discussion Groups have saved my bacon many
times, and the MVPs have been unbelievably accurate. Thanks particularly to
you for your help and guidance.

You are welcome. I have had the same experience using these newsgroups, and
that is why I give back a little and try to back up David Bartosik MVP. He
is the primary reason I know what I know about using Publisher to build a
website (that and a lot of trial and terror ;-). Or as in the movie...Pay it
Forward.
