Dialog Listbox SLOW!

It seems that in some of my office 2003 apps (Word, Excel, Outlook) when I
open a dialog box and hit the Down-Arrow button on the top Listbox (which
shows the current folder or usually MyDocuments), the computer appears to
lockup for about 30-45 seconds. If I don't click anything else, the
listbox will eventually open and all is fine until the next time I hit the
down-arrow.

If I forget and start clicking other stuff trying to abort etc, I get the
"Program not responding - Send Msg to MS" dialog thing.

This behavior just started this week (maybe an ill-behaved WinXP update?)

Thanks for any ideas!

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
