Have a ibook with systema Mac 10, and word comes with no
dictionary.
Anyone knows where is it possible to find one, doing the
same as the Word 98?

Hi,

dictionary.

Office X comes with a US English dictionary. It also comes with proofing
tools for various languages.

Anyone knows where is it possible to find one, doing the
same as the Word 98?

You should try re-installing them from the Value Pack folder in the
Office X CD. You'll probably have to re-apply some of the updates
afterwards.

Hello--

I've read several streams on the Microsoft Word: Mac
newsgroup in which you all have seemed very wise about
problems like the one I am having, so I am hoping you can help.

I have tried everything to get my Word to spell check in
English (US), but it refuses to recognize anything other
than English UK spellings. (For instance, recognize gets
cited as being a misspelling, because of the z.) I have
tried highlighting the entire text and under
tools>language>set language have set and also set the
default to English (US), but that doesn't help. I've tried
format>style>normal>modify>format>language and setting
English (US) there, as well, but that isn't working. I
checked my control panel>keyboard, and it is set to US
English. I have gone into tools>preferences>spelling and
grammar and set the language to English (US) there, but
that isn't helping either.

This is a recent problem in a program that has worked fine
for 3+ years on this computer, and I can only imagine that
it is connected to my recently editing a group of papers
written by foreign nationals, whose Word settings were to
English (UK), but I am not able to over-ride them. Now, it
is affecting even new blank documents, in which only the
British spelling is being recognized.

I would so very grateful for any direction/advice/help you
may provide. These papers must all be converted to English
(US) spelling, and it's getting arduous to pick through 9
thirty-five page papers to find individual words with UK
instead of US spellings...

Thanks so much!

Many of us can probably find a solution :)) That's why the newsgroups
work well, everyone can answer everybody else's questions :))

That's the right thing to do though so I would assume the proffing tools
are not installed properly.

Since you are talking about control panels, I assume you are in MacOS 9
and therefore use Office 2001. The keyboard setup have nothing to do
with the spell checking. It only tells the Mac which way the keys on
your keyboard are mapped.
I can type in English in Word with my layout set for the French
keyboard.

You probably should use the install CD to install the proofing tools (in
the value pack folder). Don;t forget to apply all the updates on Office.
If the US proofing tools are installed, there is no reason why Office
could not spell check for US English.
