Dictionary guide words

I am writing a dictionary. The defined words/phrases are 8 point; the rest of
the text is 6 point.

The header has a page number: even pages on the left side and odd pages on
the right side.

I want to put guide words (first defined word/phrase on the page and last
defined word/phrase on the page) separated by a centered dot in the header:
1/4" to the right of the page number on the even pages and 1/4" to the left
of the page number on the odd pages.

Any ideas on how to accomplish that?

Use a STYLEREF field located in the appropriate position in the header with
the page layout set to Different Odd and Even pages.

Word 2007
WOW! I never knew this existed. I almost have it. Please help me work out
the final glitch and I will be thrilled:

Let FW = FIRST WORD/PHRASE IN 8 PT ON PAGE
Let LW = LAST WORD/PHRASE IN 8 PT ON PAGE

Here's what I want in the header:
FW * LW

Here's what I did:
I changed all 8 PT spaces to a hard space (so it would return the phrase
instead of part of it).
I defined all 8 PT words, excluding superscripts (because I don't want them
in the header), as HEADERWORD1 style.
Then using different odd/even headers (to place them appropriately) I put in
StyleRef | HEADERWORD1 for FW.
Works like a charm!

However, for LW, I did the same thing but checked off "Search from bottom of
page to top" in the Field Codes to get the LAST word/phrase on the page.
Instead of consistently returning the last word/phrase on THAT page, it
sometimes returns the first or second word/phrase on the NEXT page.

Please help. I am so close yet so far. Any idea what is causing the error?

Waiting with bated breath and MUCH GRATITUDE...

I think I see a way to avoid the problem. Originally I put the page numbers
in the Header with a table. If I eliminate the table, I eliminate the
problem--so far as I see at the moment. Is this a known issue?

I have run into a problem even without the table. Maybe you can help me
resolve it.

When LW has a superscript, the word is omitted from the guide words and the
final guide word is left blank. When FW has a superscript, it is stripped
from the word/phrase and printed accurately in the guide words.

I cannot use the same style on the superscript or it will not be a
suerscript any longer. It's interesting that FW works fine but not LW.

Can you help?
