Dictionary problems

Mark Rich

All,

I have some dictionary issues with Word 2004. I have set the language
under TOOLS to English (UK) but Word identifies the word 'colour' as
mis-spelt. The only options for correction is the American spelling,
'color'.

There is also no option to add the correct spelling to the dictionary
as ADD as an option is 'greyed out'.

I have tried deleting and recreating the 'custom dictionary' to see if
that helps but no such luck.

Can anyone advice?

Mark

Hi Mark,

What language is your keyboard set to? If you set it to Brittish and set
the language to English (UK) do you still find the same issue?

As regards the custom dictionary, when you created the new dictionary is it
showing up as active in the Spelling and Grammar Preferences?

Thanks,
Fergal.

I am using a UK PowerBook with a British (English UK) keyboard.

The Custom Dictionary is set and visable from the Spelling and Grammer
Preferences. If I choose 'DICTIONARIES' next to the item I can see the
'Custom Dictionary' is selected and the language is 'English UK'.

When you type 'Colour' and select Tools / Spelling does the language in the
Speller say English (US)?
If so you can either select all the text in your document and change the
language to English (UK), you can also click on the Default button to change
the defaul language to English (UK). Only use the default setting if you
will be using English (UK) for all your documents!

Let me know if this helps?
Fergal.

Okay, I highlighted the word in the document and choose TOOLS and
LANGUAGE. It again had selected 'English US'. Changed to 'English UK'
and it seems fine. Highlighted all the text in the document and did
the same. It asked if I wanted to change the normal.dot file and I
answered yes. I guess it had become stuck in the wrong language
settings.

I still can't add new words to the custom dictionary. Any ideas there?

Can you try and recreate another custom dictionary and this time do not set
the language to English (UK) to the custom dictionary? Maybe the setting
got mixed up when changing from English (US) to (UK).

Thank you. That seemed to do the trick. I deleted the existing Custom
Dictionary which was stored in APPLICATIONS/MICROSOFT OFFICE
2004/OFFICE and created a new folder in <USER>/LIBRARY/APPLICATION
SUPPORT/ called MICROSOFT. I then created a new custom dictionary with
UK language in this folder and typed a mis-spelt word and tried to add
to the dictionary. It worked fine.

Side note:

While Application Support makes a lot of sense, another good place to store
the Custom Dictionary is in user/library/preferences/microsoft, and then it
is stored in the same place as your preference files and the autocorrect
list, and you can just back up that entire Microsoft folder regularly, or
the entire prefs folder.
