Dictionary/ spelling and grammar

My dictionary is faulty or not working.....
when typing in a new document the spell check does not work at all....
But if i copy text into a word document for a web site or other, it works fine...
it also tell me it does not recognize the language of the text and prompts me to change it, i have done several time's, but the problem is still there...... have no problem if i'm checking spelling outside of word, for example, this window that i'm typing in now..... my mac spell check works just fine... hope you can help me with this... and i'm sure its something simple...

Yeah, it's simple, but it's a fiddle to put it right.

It's the Language setting on your text. I suspect that the Language is
specified wrongly in your Normal template.

Since you have not stated which version of Word you're using, I can't tell
you how to put it right: but the Help will, if you look up "Spelling" and
"Language".

Hi john,
my language is set to english (uk)
sorry for not including this in my first mail....
But the version i'm using is -
11.3.8 (070817) Word 2004 for mac
plus the dictionary my word is using is set to "Custom dictionary", does this effect this matter.....? do hope you can help me with this.... as i happen to be the worst speller in the world and i am lost without spell check.... thanking you in advance,
