Now that I think about it, I have the same question.

Is there a way to get a cross-definition, e.g. Type in an English word and
get a Spanish definition?

If I am not mistaken newer versions of MSWord for Windows has this option.

Is there a way to turn it on for a Mac?

It's not available in MacWord. It's only available in WinOffice03, and
from what I've heard it works pretty well for word-for-word translation,
but less so on translating moderate to longer passages.

WinOffice03 uses both local dictionaries and internet dictionaries and
translation sources.

Personally, I'd be happier if MacBU avoided the bloat involved with
implementing a local strategy and just made Services available in
MacWord - that way I could choose my own translation/dictionary service.

In any case, make sure you take the time to express your views to MacBU
via the Help/Feedback on Word menu item.
