I have read through the dictionary help threads but nothing is working. Prior to downloading the 'fix' things seemed to work.
Steps/Info:
MacBook - Leopard OSX 10.5.4 Microsoft Office MAC 2008 v.12.1.1 (080522).

100% clean install (MacBook was in repair (cracked screen), hard-drive was wiped clean and they (tech support) reinstalled leopard, etc. I installed Office. Problems started (crashing) so I didn't even get to the dictionary. I uninstalled (and made sure everything was removed!) Another install, .... worked until the dictionary. When I did the recommended steps re: custom dictionary (U.S. English), (dragging the dictionary to Word, editing, saving....) it CRASHES! (sorry for the shout!)

I "had" iWork, unfortunately, it went when they wiped out my hard drive (saved everything else!!) my iwork program was wiped out and I do not have disks nor is there any record of download (upgrade from '06)... but have the record in my bank statement date and amount but no serial number (purchased from Apple website... and I've already spoken to them twice). I'm usually a maniac about documenting everything (and I did pay for it!)....but this one got by me.

Sorry for two questions, but maybe someone knows what I can do about that (I've been unemployed and cannot afford to pay again for the program). Also, I included it in case someone suggest that I use it.

Thank you very much in advance ... for all help!!
Karen

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention... the program worked just fine prior to the repair but even more important before I downloaded the very last patch(s).

Perhaps I should uninstall, etc. again and re-install... and not download the patches (there were two). ?? thanks again! :)

Sorry, I'm not following exactly what the problem is here. Word crashes
when you attempt to edit the custom dictionary? Please detail the exact
steps that cause a crash.

Hi Karen:

When they wiped the hard disk, they also wiped all the updates.

You do not mention that you re-applied the Updates. If not, you need to
re-apply them again. There are three, but 12.1.0 and 12.1.1 are all you
need. Get them from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx?pid=Mactopia_Office2008&fid=C75D

It also sounds as though your Custom Dictionary may be corrupt. If it is,
it is not going to be fixable. Simply delete it and create a new one.

You mentioned you are working in US English, with the Custom Dictionary set
to "No Language"? If you are, that's good. If you are working in a
different language, sadly, dictionary bugs are likely.

Now: Go back to the Repair Shop and tell them that they had no need to wipe
the hard disk to fix a screen. So therefore, you want your data back.
Since you are sure that due to their incompetence they did not back your
data up first, you understand that that may now be impossible. In which
case, if they give you a new copy if iWork, you will not write a letter to
Apple complaining about them.

Don't smile, and you should get away with it. I suspect they couldn't be
bothered replacing the screen: they have replaced the whole computer (a new
screen plus the labour to fit it costs more than the computer...)

However, any competent repair shop knows that the customer's data is more
important than anything else, and they have lost yours. So they should feel
suitably guilty. And if they have done a sneaky and replaced your entire
machine on Apple's dime, there is no way they want any letters turning up in
Cupertino complaining about them :)

Hope this helps
