Sam:

The standard SharePoint container heirarchy and nomeclature is as follows:

1) SharePoint Farm: A collection of one or more servers that work together
to serve SharePoint functionality.
2) Web Application: An IIS web site extended with SharePoint to host Site
Collections.
3) Site Collection: A collection of SharePoint sites that contains a
top-level site and optional child sites, and is the base unit for ownership,
security,
and recovery.
4) Top-Level Site: The top-most user-accessible site in a SharePoint Site
Collection, which can contain pages, lists, libraries, and child sites.
5) Sub-Sites: Child sites in a SharePoint Site Collection organized in a
hierarchical fashion below a Top-Level site, and can contain pages, lists,
libraries, and other child sites.
6) Lists and Libraries: Containers that hold structured and unstructured
data within a SharePoint site.

If by workspaces, you are referring to a Project Workspace, in this case
each workspace is its own sub-site of a site collection that contains the
Project Workspaces. If you are thinking of something else when you refer to
a "workspace" please specify that in your reply. Otherwise, the term
"workspace" is a label that someone might use to refer to a Top level site,
subsite or even a List or Library within a SharePoint site.
