difference between forms, addins and plugins

What is the difference between outlook forms, addins, and plugins?

I see these 3 terms used throughout the outlook related websites. Are they
simply synonymes for one another that mean the same thing, or are there
distinct differences and advantages / disadvantages to them?

I'm trying to determine which route to go in terms of Outlook development.
