difference between Publisher and Quark?

Carrie

I know, this is a Publisher group!

I've only used Publisher and it's fine with me, does what I want. My
daughter uses it (I turned her on to it and sometimes help her with
questions) but... she just got hired (to start in a few weeks) for a
newspaper office that uses mac computers (she's never used ) and has Quark
Xpress (I think that's it?) I've seen an older version of Quark and it
seemed like Publisher but not as simple.

Was wondering if anyone here was familiar with both programs and could
point out any differences that might help her catch on to using Quark (she
also has to get used to using mac after only having a pc) She got the job,
telling them her lack of experience, and is going to go in part time to
start and practice, starting more in the fall when a currently employee goes
back to college.

It's kind of a small town paper, weekly and involves setting up the
pages, ads, etc, which (she was told) someone then submits to a printing
company electronically, to be printed.

Thanks
Carrie

Quark Express (http://www.quark.com/) is the desktop publishing (page
layout) program of choice for business use for Mac computers and many PC
types The competition has been Adobe PageMaker and its newer relative, In
Design. There is a relatively high learning curve when starting to use the
program and properly use all its features. There is fairly good online
training available
http://www.quark.com/service/desktop/training/quarked.cfm.

She can download a fully functional 30 day trial here for her Windows based
system http://snipurl.com/1o3s2 or the long URL is
http://www.quark.com/service/deskto...0103&keywords=&search=condensed&Search=Search

It is a much more powerful page layout program than Publisher (and much more
cost - $749 - 1500 per license.) It is capable of doing professional color
separations for large 4 color commercial printing press output. (I used to
use PageMaker to do the same for my previous employer as we used PCs and I
couldn't get them to purchase Quark.) Publisher has come a long way and can
now do color separation work but it is still not as powerful.

Hope the above information helps

Perhaps you need to contact a Quark newsgroup and ask for helpful hints.

Since I'm looking to see the difference between Quark and Publisher, they
will probably tell me to ask on a Publisher group (LOL)

Thanks!

It's not like she is choosing Quark over Publisher (which she has learned
and uses at h ome) it's what the office she is going to work at uese.

I don't know why they need it, at least for the color stuff, it's a weekly
newspaper and don't think there is anything with color in it. Like most
newspapers, it doesn't seem too clearly printed, either. They send it as an
electronic file, somewhere to be printed, and someone from the office picks
it up.

I have tried learning Pagemaker and gave up. Seemed like I had to have
expensive adobe fonts, or substitute (which I'd do) and I kept thinking "why
do I have to do this when I can do the same, easier and faster, with
Publisher?"

I think a lot is name and price.

I won't repeat or expand on the distinctions between the two programs, but
thought your daughter might benefit from the following:

There's a lot of good info on making the transition from PC to Mac.

Thanks, I'm passing it on.

She is going to start going in one afternoon a week and getting used to it
before the college student they now have leaves and she can come in full
time.

Carrie,

What they are going to tell you (right or wrong) is that Quark is a
professional DTP program (but falling behind InDesign) that is widely
supported by printers while Pub is more for the Small Office/Home Office
group who uses their inkjet or laser printers to produce hardcopy.

Quark is a lot more complicated to learn and use, at least until one
becomes familiar with it. One contributor to my paper sent me his pages
in Quark and I would have to edit them before outputting as pdf files.
But it is also capable of much better professional output.

You might also post your question to the publisher.prepress NG, there
are a few people more familiar with Quark who hang out there.

Mike
