Difference between SharePoint Server and SharePoint Services

Michael W.

Hello,

I want to use MS Project Server 2007 and MS Project Portfolio Server 2007.
Is there any advantage using MS Office SharePoint Server 2007 (not just
Windows SharePoint Services)?

Thanks a lot,
Michael W.

Hi Michael,

Windows SharePoint Services ( WSS ) is required to run Project Server 2007,
since Project Server 2007 is a sharepoint application. SharePoint Server (
MOSS ) is not required to run Project Server or Portfolio Server. The big
advantage of having MOSS is in the additional functionality it offers. for
example Worklfow, KPI Indicators and Excel Services allowing you to create
great looking reports on the net. This should not be the reason to get MOSS.
MOSS is much much bigger than that. It allows organisations to organise
information, and in many ways acts as a "seconds operating system". I would
suggest you reading more about the MOSS cababillities. You can find plenty of
information on the Microsoft page ( or google it ).
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any more questions
regarding MOSS and WSS.

Hi Marc!

Thanks for your answer.
I already read a lot about the MOSS and the WSS. And I know (as you
mentioned) that the MOSS is very powerful.
In my case we want to use WSS in combination with Project Server (MOPS) and
Project Portfolio Server (MOPPS).
But we already have a separate MOSS in use. Originally we wanted these two
systems (the MOSS and the new WSS) to stay separated.
But this would only make sense, if there is no advantage of using MOSS
instead of WSS in combination with MOPS and MOPPS.
Therefore I want to know if there is any advantage if I combine this
“separate†MOSS with the MOPS and the MOPPS instead of just using WSS.

Thanks a lot for your help!

There most certainly are Michael,

you can utilise the MOSS functionality withing Project Server like:
- KPI Lists for visual reporting
- Excel Services - for reporting against project or resource data
and you also have Project Server web parts which you can utilise wihtin MOSS
to personlise your information.

There are many advantages using both MOSS and Project Server together.
Hope this helps

Sreenath:

MOSS - Microsoft Office SharePoint Server is the non-free version of
SharePoint that provides lots of sophisticated enterprise content management
capabilities. Project Server provides functionality specifically for
managing projects. Both of these run on top of Windows SharePoint Services
3.0, which is a free add-on for Windows Server and provides basic document
and list management capabilities. MOSS and Project Server do not depend on
each other and are completely separate applications in 2007. This changes
for 2010, whereby Project Server 2010, requires Microsoft SharePoint Server
2010. That's it in a nutshell. You can find lots of information about these
products on the Microsoft site.
